UPDATE ON 81 YEAR OLD GEOFFREY HAWKINS

UPDATE ON 81 YEAR OLD GEOFFREY HAWKINS

A good-news update on Geoffrey Hawkins, the 81-year-old who pulled over momentarily in the 90-kilometre Sydney-to-the-Gong Ride because he was coughing!  (Column 8, 4 & 11 November)

Geoffrey, who has lymphoma, had his spleen removed two weeks ago. He is doing well.  It turned out that his baffling, undiagnosed cough was caused by his enlarged spleen, all 2.5 kilos of it, crushing his lung.  He told me he had ridden up very steep hills in the Great Australian Bike Ride in Tasmania in March and wondered why he was puffed.  Despite his broken hip, diagnosis of lymphoma in June and debilitating cough, he continued cycling.  He finished the Sydney-Gong Ride with one functional lung while having chemotherapy.  I told you he is remarkable!
